Commencement

Commencement at UNC Charlotte is held twice annually, once in May and once in December.  However, the Graduate School confers degrees after each term (Spring, 1st Summer, 2nd Summer, and Fall).  Summer graduates participate in the December ceremonies.  Doctoral graduates and their advisors, are requested to participate in the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony typically held the day prior to Commencement.

In order to participate in Commencement events, a student must have successfully completed all degree requirements and submitted all required forms by the published University deadlines found in the Academic Calendar.  Please note that diplomas and graduate certificates are not distributed at Commencement but instead mailed out 6-8 weeks after the ceremony. All graduates should verify their current email and mailing address through my.uncc.edu.

  • Detailed instructions on the line-up, procession, and ceremony logistics, can be found on the University's Commencement website.
  • Graduate caps and gowns are available at the Campus Bookstore several months prior to commencement. UNC Charlotte also offers custom doctoral regalia.

Doctoral Hooding Ceremony

The Doctoral Hooding Ceremony is a time-honored tradition of individually recognizing graduating doctoral students through a separate event, usually the Thursday prior to the University Commencement ceremony. Students are required to wear regalia. Each student is hooded by the Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Thomas Reynolds, and the student’s dissertation advisor. At the end of the ceremony, students receive their diploma. Tickets are required for all guests. One-two months prior to graduation, graduating doctoral students will receive information at their UNCC email, with the invitation, RSVP form, ticket requests, regalia orders, and other information about the Ceremony.

In addition to the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony, graduating students may also participate in the Commencement Ceremony.  For more information on the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony and its related events, visit the Center for Graduate Life website.  For additional questions, please email Aura Young, Doctoral Student Services Specialist, the Graduate School.
