Funding a Graduate Education

2009 Third Year GASP Scholars' Reception
09The Graduate School at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is committed to fostering excellence in all aspects of graduate studies, which includes helping all students to learn about the many options available for financing a graduate education. Many students are familiar with traditional financial aid, such as loans and scholarships. However, many academic departments and administrative units at UNC Charlotte offer funding as well.

In addition to awards offered throughout the University, several fellowships and scholarships are administered by the Graduate School for qualified students. Outstanding doctoral and master's students may also qualify for tuition awards (e.g. GASP for resident and non-resident, full-time doctoral students, or NRTD for non-resident master's students). Because these are very competitive tuition awards, not every eligible student may be enrolled. Nomination and eligibility criteria differ by opportunity. Please contact your Graduate Program Coordinator for more information.

Academic Departments

Your Program Coordinator

Each program has a coordinator who is familiar with the needs of students within that discipline, making them an invaluable resource for students seeking financial aid. Coordinators can help you to learn more about aid within your academic department, college, and beyond. A complete list of graduate program coordinators can be found at www.graduateschool/academics/programs.html.

Academic Common Market

The Academic Common Market (UNC-ACM) is a cooperative tuition-reduction agreement among 16 states that participate in the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB): Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Under this program, qualified students from states outside North Carolina may apply through their own state's ACM coordinator for reduced tuition rates at UNC Charlotte while pursuing programs that are not available in their home state's university system. In essence, qualified students are considered "in-state" residents during the time they are pursuing their specified degree program, therefore making them eligible for reduced tuition rates and other opportunities afforded residents who attend the institution.

For more detailed information about the application process, including an ACM contact in each of the participating states, see the UNC-ACM web site and the SREB-ACM web site.
