Charlotte Research Scholars programNew and independent research is a critical component of most graduate school programs, yet the skills needed to be successful in research are rarely taught in the undergraduate curriculum. To that end, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has developed the Charlotte Research Scholars (CRS) program to provide undergraduate students training and experiences needed to be successful in research. Center for Graduate Life Cone 268In order to meet the needs of graduate students who are unable to attend the professional development workshops presented by the Center for Graduate Life (CGL), the CGL has produced a series of video programs and is now displaying them on their website.  These Virtual Training opportunities, found at http://gradlife.uncc.edu/virtual-training, allow viewers to participate through on-line learning and share the experience throughout their cohort.

Studio 345With the assistance of UNC Charlotte graduate student, Tammie Rosser, Charlotte Housing Authority, and Studio 345 ,digital photography students teamed up with the residents of Edwin Towers to create an intergenerational story telling project.  This project was designed to bring older adults and youth in our community together to share experiences and talents across generations.

Over the course of two weeks, Studio 345 students visited Edwin Towers during each of their class periods.  The initial session was a meet-and-greet to introduce the students to the residents and allow everyone to mingle. The William Randolph Hearst Foundations recently awarded the UNC Charlotte School of Nursing (SON) in the College of Health and Human Services a $100,000 grant to support diverse and minority graduate students enrolled in its Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs.  Read the article.

GLF International fellowshipJohanna Claire Schuch, a Geography and Urban Regional Analysis doctoral student, has been named recipient of UNC Charlotte’s International Graduate Student Scholarship, chosen from 60 nominees.

Schuch will receive an award of $1,000 from the International Student/Scholar Office. Hailing from the Netherlands, Schuch focuses her academic interests in the areas of migration, community health, social disparities, sustainable development, and globalization. In addition to being a second-year doctoral student, she is a Graduate Life Fellow, and research assistant on a social determinants of health study. Her advisor is Heather Smith.

Graduate research symposium winnersCongratulations to the winners of the 13th Annual Graduate Research Symposium recently held in Atkins Library.  The Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG,) in collaboration with the Graduate School, J. Murrey Atkins Library and the Diversity in Information Technology Institute with sponsorship from the Charlotte Research Institute, organized the symposium to foster and promote the rich and diverse research environment of UNC Charlotte.  This year’s winners are:

dissertation award 2013The Graduate School is seeking nominations for the 2013 Graduate Dean's Distinguished Dissertation Awards.

Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Tom Reynolds, created the award to recognize the doctoral candidate whose research best represents an unusually significant contribution to their discipline.  The category this year is Biological and Life Sciences.  Both methodological and substantive quality will be judged.  In addition, the winner will receive $1,000 and be presented with a Graduate School plaque.  The entry will also be submitted to the Council of Graduate School’s annual competition, where they will be eligible for an honorarium and a certificate of citation.
