Sajedeh Safari

Sajedeh Safari has been named as recipient of the International Student/Scholar Office graduate scholarship.  Safari, is a Ph.D. student in bioinformatics and computational biology from Iran.  In her application, Safari noted how she has gained strength and perspective through her interactions with friends from new cultures during her experience as an international student at UNC Charlotte. Her research and publishing accomplishments while at UNC Charlotte also contributed to her selection.  She received a $1,000 award, too.

Dr. Pinku MukherjeeDr. Pinku Mukherjee, professor of cancer biology at UNC Charlotte, has been awarded the 2012 Charlotte Venture Challenge grand prize for her firm CanDiag Inc., developers of technology for the early detection of breast cancer.   Read the article.

Sarah HaasSarah Haas received several awards and travel opportunities recently. 

First, she received the National Science Foundation RCN FORECAST (Research Coordination Network: Forecasts Of Resource and Environmental Changes: Data Assimilation Science and Technology) training grant of $2,000. The goal of the FORECAST initiative is: i) broader dissemination of data assimilation (DA) methods that scientists can use to address environmental challenges and ii) identification of ecological problems and research themes that can benefit from new or enhanced modeling and analysis tools.  The grant allows Haas to pursue a research exchange outside of UNC Charlotte in order to learn new statistical and data-model assimilation techniques. Doctoral student Elizabeth Shockey

Congratulations to Liz Shockey, Ph.D. student in Geography and Urban Regional Analysis, who has been elected the Student Representative to the Southeastern Division of the Association of American Geographers (SEDAAG) Steering Committee for 2012.  Shockey has recently been in the news receiving the Best Paper Presentation at the GPSG Graduate Research Fair and is a recipient of the Graduate School's 2012 Herschel and Cornelia Everett Foundation First-Year Graduate Fellowship.

Religious Studies master's students Julie Hawks and Ilya Merlin, have been selected to read papers at this November’s annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) in Chicago.  Hawks will present in the Religion, Film, and Visual Culture program unit, while Merlin will be reading in the Hip-Hop and Religion section.  "This is a significant achievement," says Blumenthal Professor of Judaic Studies John C. Reeves.  "It serves to perpetuate our program’s strong representation among local, regional, and national professional conferences."

The Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte has maintained its prestigious business and accounting accreditation by AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Only 649 schools of business, or less than five percent worldwide, have earned this distinguished hallmark of excellence in management education.  Of these, only 178 institutions have earned specialized accreditation for their accounting programs.

To maintain AACSB accreditation, a business program must undergo a rigorous internal review every five years.  The program must demonstrate its commitment to a series of quality standards, including faculty qualifications, strategic management of resources, interactions of faculty and students, and a commitment to continuous improvement and achievement of learning goals in degree programs.  In addition to developing and implementing a mission-driven plan to satisfy AACSB’s 21 business quality...

Dr. Fred Spooner

Dr. Fred Spooner, in the College of Education’s Department of Special Education and Child Development, will receive the 2012 TED/Pearson Award for Excellence in Education. The honor, from the Council for Exceptional Children’s Teacher Education Division, will be presented at the organization’s annual meeting in Denver.

The US Department of Energy Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO) Fellowship Program is seeking a talented graduate student for automated access control and secured wireless computing research in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Students from the following disciplines are encouraged to apply: computer science; engineering; information systems/technology;computer engineering; cyber/computer security;or other related degrees in engineering and/or technology. Veronica CetetePh.D. student, Veronica Catete, has been selected to receive a Microsoft Graduate Women’s Scholarship.  The one-year scholarship program is for women graduate students and is designed to help increase the number of women pursuing a Ph.D. degree.  The program supports women in their second year of graduate school.  Catete joins peers from other institutions including Princeton, Cornell, UC Berkeley, Stanford and Carnegie Mellon in earning $15,000 for the 2012–2013 academic year plus a conference and travel allowance of $2,000.  Catete is doing research in the Games+Learning Lab on computing outreach programs for young middle school women.

UNC Charlotte’s College of Computing and Informatics announced that Dr. Mohamed Shehab, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Software and Information Systems, has been selected to receive a Google Research Award.  Dr. Shehab received $55,000 for his research proposal, “Third Party Application Policy Management in Social Networks”. The project will investigate policy management mechanisms, to provide recommendations to aid users when deciding on privacy policies related to social network applications. The proposed policy recommendation mechanisms will be developed and integrated in current state of the art authorization architectures.
