Submit Your ETD

Overview

An electronic thesis or dissertation (ETD) is the same product as a paper thesis or dissertation, simply in electronic form. The ETD provides a technologically advanced medium for expressing your ideas. Instead of printing a hard copy on a laser printer, the thesis/dissertation is printed to a Portable Document Format file (.pdf) and saved for electronic submission to the Graduate School. Submitting the ".pdf" version is done electronically through the online ETD Submission Process. ETDs are suitable for machine archives and can be viewed on the World Wide Web (WWW).

Steps to Submitting an ETD

Step 1: On or before the first day of classes of the semester or summer term in which you intend to submit your thesis/dissertation for graduation:

  • Be registered for the semester or term you intend to graduate.

  • Complete the online Application for Degree through My UNC Charlotte.

The Graduate School guidelines for formatting and submitting dissertations and theses are are available on the Center for Graduate Life website.

Step 2: Schedule the defense of your dissertation or thesis well in advance of the submission deadline in order to submit your final document to the Graduate School.

**Note: Your committee must have your complete dissertation or thesis three (3) weeks prior to your defense. You need to leave adequate time to make any modifications required by your advisor and/or the committee.  The deadline for submission of the final electronic dissertation or thesis to the Graduate School (equivalent to the final date for uploading the ETD to the Submission Website) can be found in the Academic Calendar.

Step 3: Defend your dissertation or thesis.  Have your committee sign the Title/Signature page of the dissertation or thesis and your Defense Report Form. Both forms can be found on the Forms page at http://graduateschool.uncc.edu/current-students/forms.

Step 4: Make any edits to your document as required by your committee. Also, make any formatting changes to your dissertation or thesis as recommended in the Manual of Formatting Requirements for Theses and Dissertations.

Step 5: Complete the Dissertation/Thesis Submission and ETD Form and pay the submission and formatting fee of $45.  The fee can be paid by check or money order made payable to UNC Charlotte and submitted at the final formatting meeting or in the Graduate School.

Step 6: Submit your final version of the dissertation or thesis electronically following the instructions below:

  • The web address for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Submission is http://dissertations.umi.com/uncc/.
  • You may be required to fill out several screens of information. (Note: When you are asked to insert a copy of your abstract into the form, do not include the title and your name with the abstract).
  • After filling in the required information, you will up-load the ".pdf" copy of your dissertation or thesis.

Step 7: Complete the "Survey of Earned Doctorates” online at https://sed-ncses.org/GradDateRouter.aspx. This is required for Ph.D students (Ed.D., DNP, and Master’s students are exempt). Upon completing the survey, it is important that you print the “Certificate of Completion” and submit it to the Graduate School.

Step 8: You will be notified by email that your ETD has been successfully uploaded. After the review of the dissertation or thesis by the Graduate School, you may receive an email indicating any formatting corrections that are necessary before the final version of your ETD can be accepted. Upon approval of your ETD by the Graduate School, you will be notified by email that it has been accepted.

**Reminder: The following documents must be received by the Graduate School by the published deadlines before you can be cleared for graduation:

  • The Title/Signature page of the dissertation or thesis, signed by your committee members (original signatures)
  • Defense Report Form, signed by your committee members (original signatures)
  • The UNC Charlotte Dissertation/Thesis Submission and ETD Form. Submit a check or money order to the Graduate School for the Submission and Formatting fee of $45 and any appropriate fees, such as the copyright registration fee of $55, which is optional. There is no fee for Traditional Publishing; however, if you choose Open Access Publishing instead of Traditional Publishing, the fee is $95. These fees go to ProQuest but the check should be made payable to "UNC Charlotte."
  • The Certificate of Completion for the "Survey of Earned Doctorates”. Not applicable to Ed.D., DNP, or Master’s students.

Congratulations! Upon your graduation, your electronic dissertation or thesis will be made accessible via the World Wide Web.
